#23 crossed off the list!

I paid off my student loans today (WHEE!) so I figured it was a good time to do a quick 30 Before 30 update:
  1. meet 30 new people I think I'm at about 20
  2. read 30 (non-self help) books I'm at 10. This needs work.
  3. watch 30 of the IMDB Top 250 films I haven't even looked at this. Whoops.
  4. get married DONE!
  5. travel outside the country DONE! Now I just need to upload the photos...
  6. run a half marathon I've started training, but this one is pretty iffy at this point.
  7. launch an Etsy shop I'm still brainstorming.
  8. try 30 new foods If you count recipes, I'm probably close to done. If you only count ingredients, this one needs some work. I did try gator, though. That should count for at least 20 of the 30, right?
  9. save $5000 (after IRA and retirement contributions) I'm pretty close, but I don't feel like I can cross this off until my actual birthday in case I get spendy.
  10. volunteer at least 30 hours of my time I'm at about 2 hours. I really need to focus on this.
  11. every 3 months, donate 30 items to Goodwill or Salvation Army So far, so good.
  12. sell 30 items on Craigslist or Ebay I think we've sold about 10-12 items.
  13. take a language class Does Greek count? I vote yes.
  14. learn to sew
  15. redo floors in living room DONE!
  16. be able to do 30 military style push-ups
  17. take a stand-up or improv class and perform in front of an audience DONE! I may do this one again.
  18. try 30 new recipes If you count green smoothie recipes that I made up based on what I had in my refrigerator, I probably already tried 30 recipes. If you don't count those, I'm probably at around 10 or 15
  19. go on a road trip
  20. win a contest of some kind
  21. take a dance class DONE!
  22. go to the dentist (twice) I really need to work on this...
  23. pay off student loans DONE!!!
  24. learn to make a daisy chain Lyndee (who did our wedding flowers) says she can teach me.
  25. learn to play 30 songs on the ukulele I'm still hovering at 10 or so.
  26. learn to drive a stick shift
  27. attend 30 yoga classes
  28. complete savings vs. lottery experiment
  29. make a list of the top 30 things I'm most happy to have already crossed off my bucket list
  30. skip at least one item on this list I don't think this one will be a problem.

Spring has sprung!

One of my main goals in life is to try to have a positive outlook. This goes against my natural tendency to always see - or at the very least, anticipate - the worst in a situation.

For the past couple of weeks, though, I've been having a much easier time seeing the bright side of life. Maybe it's newlywed bliss. At any rate, these are the things that are currently making me almost (dare I say it?) giddy:
  • Austin has an oldies station again. We haven't had one for about a decade. I'm ridiculously excited - I was raised on a musical diet of oldies and oldies country. My time spent dancing in my car has increased by at least 417% in the past week. (The only downside is that the station seems to consider Debbie Gibson and Prince "oldies." Don't get me wrong; I love 80's music as much as the next girl, but c'mon. I was alive in the 80's. I'm not old enough to be an oldie yet, am I?)
  • The weather has been fantastic. On top of that, it's a banner season for wildflowers in Texas. There are blue skies and flowers everywhere you look. The grass is green, the birds are singing... I feel like I've stumbled into a Disney cartoon. Take a look at these pictures of my niece and nephew in the bluebonnets. ADORABLE!
  • As I mentioned yesterday, we booked our honeymoon. There's not much in life I enjoy as much as I enjoy vacation planning. The fact that Achilles and I are both art history buffs and we're going to Greece makes the planning even more fun.
  • It's Friday! I don't work this weekend! I have no wedding or comedy performance to plan! Tonight, a few friends and I are hanging out by the pool and barbecuing. Achilles and I are also going to hang out with two of our best friends from childhood/high school - one who just got engaged (congrats David!) and one who's in town from San Francisco with her husband (who, incidentally, is one of the most laid-back people I've ever met). I'm hoping for lots of trivia, board games, and silly conversation.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend Internets!

Mawwiage is what bwings us togev-vah...

In 10 hours, Achilles and I will be married. Yay! Wish us luck, Internets!

The life

Dear Internets,

It's Friday evening. I'm sitting on the couch watching "Secret Lives of Women: Mail Order Brides" while I wait for Achilles to get home so we can go get pizza. My pre-dinner snack of macaroni and cheese is almost ready on the stove.

Sometimes life is really, really good.

Love,
Jane

As promised

Dear Internets,

Four years ago, a friend convinced me that I should buy an extra 3-day pass to ACL Fest, and sell the ticket once the festival sold out.

By early summer, ACL Fest still hadn't sold out. The friend who suggested I buy the extra ticket flaked out completely and decided not to go to the festival at all. I had an extra ticket and no one to go with.

On an impulse, I offered my extra ticket to a friend who was in Arkansas finishing up his last year of law school. Abe and I had kept in touch off and on since high school, but had recently been emailing each other more frequently: he had torn his Achilles tendon earlier that summer at an ultimate frisbee tournament and, since he couldn't drive or walk well, had been essentially housebound for several months. I had an insane boss whose weird demands kept me from having a social life. We were both having fairly miserable summers.

To my surprise, Abe said he'd love to take my extra ticket. He only had one class on Fridays that fall, and he figured he'd be able to skip it and ride down to Austin with an old college roommate who was also attending ACL Fest. Besides, he said, since he had torn his Achilles tendon and not his ACL, he wouldn't be exceeding the festival's irony quotient.

So, three years ago Abe, his former roommate Ian, and Ian's friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend Jennifer piled into Ian's car and drove down to Austin for ACL Fest 2006.

That weekend we danced like hippies at Ray LaMontagne and sang along with Willie Nelson and tried our best to stay cool in the 100+ degree heat. I laughed so much my face hurt. By the third night, I was pretty sure I never wanted the weekend to end.

Unfortunately, the weather seemed to have other plans. That Sunday night, a major thunderstorm hit just before Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (the headliners) were supposed to take the stage. When the band still hadn't taken the stage 30 minutes into their allotted time slot, thousands of other festival-goers headed home, assuming the lightening wouldn't stop and the band wouldn't be allowed to play. Abe, Jennifer, Ian and I huddled near the concession stands, still holding out hope.

Finally, the lightening and thunder stopped and the band took the stage. As the opening bars to "Listen to Her Heart" began to play, I touched Abe's arm to let him know that Jennifer and I were going to move closer to the stage. As he looked down at me, it hit me like a ton of bricks: I really liked this guy.

We danced and sang in the rain like we were the only people in the world. At some point during the concert, Abe put his hand on my shoulder. "I owe you a ticket to ACL Fest next year," he said.

By ACL Fest 2007, Abe had finished law school and moved back to Austin, and I had just purchased my condo. We had only been officially dating for a few months, so we spent the festival staring moonily into each others' eyes and holding hands and likely being fairly obnoxious.

Two weeks before ACL Fest 2008, Abe moved in with me to my condo.

And two weeks ago, Abe knelt down in the mud at ACL Fest 2009. He told me that on the way home from the festival three years ago, he'd told Jennifer and Ian that he was going to marry me someday. He held my hand and asked me to marry him, and I cried and said yes, and he gave me a ring.

And hopefully, this is the part where we live happily ever after.

Love,
Jane

The very first song that the radio sang

Dear Internets,

Last night, I heard the Old 97's (Barrier Reef!) on the regular radio!

I've heard the Old 97's on the radio before - on NPR's "Fresh Air" and local NPR's "Texas Music Matters," on KGSR (Austin's Texas/old people music station), and once in Dallas on my way to an Old 97's concert.

But this was a mainstream country station! (Do they call them top 40 country stations?*) After the song was over, the DJ mentioned "lead singer Rhett Miller's great new band, Rhett and The Serial Lady Killers**." I felt like I had slipped into an alternate universe where music I like played on the radio and Arrested Development came on after Veronica Mars on Tuesday nights. I almost sent the DJ flowers.

It was magical.

Love,
Jane

*Is it OK to admit that I sometimes troll country radio in hopes of hearing Taylor Swift songs? It's kind of a guilty pleasure. Don't judge me.
**My imaginary Old 97's tribute band's name is The Lights Fantastic. I wish I had posted that before Rhett Miller's new band came out, because now it just looks like I'm copying. But that's OK.

Gratuitous Baby Horses

Dear Internets,

I am a pretty big fan of twin baby anythings, but these guys are particularly cute:

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Budweiser's advertising company finds out about the little guys and we get the Best Super Bowl Commercial Ever OMG PWNIES.

But that is just me.

Love ya!

Things that make me say "whee!"

Dear Internets,

Achilles, Bailey and I spent the weekend in Corpus visiting an old friend of mine from junior high. The trip was lovely. We stayed at a dog friendly hotel on the beach, so we had a lot of time just to hang out and play in the water and see the sights. The Texas coast is much cleaner than it used to be.

You know how after you haven't eaten for a while, and you get really, really hungry, the food tastes even better than normal? I think that was what happened with the vacation. It had been an awfully long time since I had two days off in a row, and I thoroughly enjoyed them.

In other news, I just paid off my car loan. Now my only consumer loan debt is my last (fairly smallish) student loan, which has a fixed interest rate of 2.85%. I can live with that!

Hope your week is also off to a good start.

Love always,
Jane

Oh P.P.P.P.S!

Achilles got a job! I mean, a job job, not a working-at-Target-with-an-advanced-degree-and-law-license-until-the-economy-effing-recovers kind of job. (No, it doesn't have anything to do with Shell - I just love that gorilla.) That is all I will say, except that I'm super happy for him, and excited that he'll be working downtown and that I'll finally have someone to carpool with. Yay! Luchador cupcakes all around!

I will sort of miss the discount, though...

Guess who's back?

Dear Internets,

We're back from Puerto Rico! The trip was lovely, although Achilles was sick for most of it. He didn't have swine flu, though, so I still think the trip was a win.

Since photo posts tend to make my attention span go out the window, I figured I'd limit this post to a few of my more interesting pictures. Sadly for you, I chose not to take pictures of the Sea School: Law School of the Sea or the cockfighting arena by our hotel.

Flaminco Beach, on Culebra. Our favorite beach. The water was lovely, and the sand was soft and white. I kept thinking to myself, "Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives..." I don't know if the beach was empty because it wasn't the weekend, but there were only a few other people there.

El Morro (I think).

Sunset at the beach by our hotel (in Isla Verde).

Coconuts: the other other white meat.
Jane: the other other other white meat.

An iguana in the parking lot of the Bacardi factory. When you hear bushes rustling in Texas, it's probably a squirrel. In Puerto Rico, it's probably some kind of reptile. This takes some getting used to.

I think this picture sums up the trip really well. Poor Achilles.

I don't really want to connect my full name to this blog, but if you promise you are not a scary person, I'll send you a link to the full Facebook album of our trip. Just send me an email or leave a comment.

Love,
Jane

P.S. If you ever have a chance to visit Puerto Rico, do it. It is inexpensive and awesome.

Jim Gaffigan is cooler than me

Dear Jim Gaffigan,

Thanks for recording your Comedy Central special in Austin on the weekend after my birthday*. It was fabulous.

This game is also fantastical. Happy Friday.

Love,
Jane

*I refuse to call it "my birthday weekend." A birthday is a day, not a weekend.

Progress, part deux

Dear Vermont,

Woohoo! You too!

I'm hoping this turns into a contest to see which states can jump on the open-mindedness bandwagon the fastest.

Fingers crossed,
Jane

P.S. This is completely unrelated, but I think I'm getting a cold or a sinus infection. This is getting ridiculous - I feel like I've been sick for a month.

What did one math book say to the other?*

Dear Internets,

Your jokes made me giggle. They brightened an other wise dreary, work-filled day.

I couldn't figure out which one was my favorite, so I told the jokes (with the exception of Liam's) to my high school students. They looked at me like they felt a little bit sorry for me, which was no help at all. I think they were just tired, though. Next, I tried telling the jokes to Bailey, but he just cocked his head at me like the RCA dog. In the end, I put everyone's name in a hat.

And the winner is Hillary! (Or perhaps, HLLARY!!!!) Check your email for an Amazon.ca gift certificate. (I figure that would be a bit easier than sending mail to Canada).

Thanks to everyone for telling me jokes. You included some of my favorites, and I learned a couple new ones. (I used to tell the "STICK!" and "NACHO CHEESE!" jokes almost as much as the one about the pirate movie.)(Have you seen it? It's rated ARRRRGH!)

Love,
Jane

P.S. Is it just me, or does the dog from the advertisement for Austin's Fittest Dog look a little bit like Bailey?

*Don't bother me; I've got my own problems.

It's a NIECE!

Dear Internets,

Sorry for the 85 posts in three days, but IT'S A GIRL! My sister is having a baby girl! This July, I'll have a niece-lette!

Yay!
Jane

P.S. Charlie got to go to the ultrasound. When he saw the baby, he said "hi baby, wake up!" SO cute.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Dear Internets,

I thought I'd take a break from the rant-iness of the past week to wish everyone a happy Valentine's Day.

I made you a Valentine just for the occasion:

It's a conversation heart, get it? (Of course you do. You Internets are pretty smart.)

I love conversation hearts. In high school, my French teacher always gave us a handful of conversation hearts for Valentine's Day. After we translated them into French, we got to eat them. I think she gave me the hard ones on purpose.

Despite the fact that I'm generally a grumpy ogre, I really do like Valentine's Day. I think it's the color scheme. Or maybe the candy... I am a fan of candy-centric holidays. (I don't buy candy until after Valentine's Day, though, because I like to feel like I'm getting a deal on my sugar fix.) Instead, tomorrow Achilles and I are going to focus on eating delicious food. We're going to Lockhart to get barbecue, because Lockhart is the BBQ Capital of Texas and Achilles has never been (sacrilege!).

I am trying my hardest to feel less grumpy about the shady car dealership and the appliance delivery people. I made them a special Valentine to show them my desire to make amends:

Maybe it needs some work.

Happy Valentine's Day, Internets!

Love,
Jane

P.S. Dear Universe,

I didn't forget about you.

XOXO,
Jane

28 before 28

Dear Internets,

Among the things I've been procrastinating about (blog award love-sharing, etc.) is writing a list of what I'd like to accomplish in my 29th year. I finally wrote down my "29 before 29" post (just two months late!) only to promptly lose it. (It's what I get, really, for always writing on scraps of paper.)

In searching for the list, however, I found an old "28 before 28" list that I made before I started this blog. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had done rather well without actively trying:
  1. Finish the Danskin Austin triathlon (done, crazy boss and all.)
  2. Do a half marathon (dropped out of the training. Oh well.)
  3. Take a vacation involving sand (not unless you count the zoo. I was going to do a triathlon vacation in Galveston, but that was before Ike.)
  4. Start a blog
  5. Learn to knit
  6. Run a 10K without stopping to walk (Done, and while I had the stomach flu to boot.)
  7. Get a promotion (farewell, crazy boss!)
  8. Paint my living room (I think I've come to terms with my need to hire someone to do this.)
  9. Pay off all credit cards (I even paid off one of my student loans.)
  10. Donate to Goodwill at least 4 times (2 times. I did donate various things several times throughout the year, but not to Goodwill.)
  11. ACL Fest (woot!)
  12. Take a self-development class to see what it's like (I'm counting the weird motivational seminar I attended on my birthday. There were pyrotechnics. It totally counts.)
  13. Get more organized (I'm definitely better, lost blog posts not withstanding.)
  14. See the Old 97's (3 times! Almost 4! Am possibly obsessed...)
  15. Read 28 books (Only if you count cheezy "how to get more organized" books. But whatever. I read real books too, so I'm counting them.)
  16. See 28 movies (I'm counting the times I got sucked into Lifetime Original Movies.)
  17. Find 28 interesting blogs to read (Oh lordy. And then some. My Google Reader needs an intervention.)
  18. Learn 28 new vocabulary words (probably, if you count work-related vocabulary.)
  19. Learn a new programming language (high five for nerdiness! I actually learned two.)
  20. Practice public speaking at least 5 times (if you count my second job, which involves speaking to teenagers, I did this many more than 5 times. If not, I did this twice.)
  21. Take a helicopter ride (we were supposed to do this for Achilles' birthday, but he decided he'd rather go to Fiesta Texas. My back/neck would probably have preferred the helicopter ride.)
  22. Go to the dentist (yes, I know, I'm a horrible person who deserves to lose all my teeth. I know.)
  23. Vote for Obama (2 times!)
  24. Caucus for Obama (It was kind of miserable, but I'm glad I did it.)
  25. Make an animated short (I didn't even get close.)
  26. Skip something on the list (7. I'm an overachiever.)
  27. Redecorate bathroom (thank you Ikea. I love you too.)
  28. Host a game night (We did this several times.)
There's the list. I wish I'd made more goals about doing well in trivia competitions or making Halloween cupcakes, but I think I did OK anyway. Soon(-ish) I'll find my 29 before 29 post and pass along my blog award.

I hope you're having a wonderful Thursday, Internets!

Love,
Jane

My morning smile

Dear Internets,

This story made my morning (it's an old story apparently, but I missed it the first time):

Love,
Jane

P.S. For those of you who can't watch YouTube, here's a link to the Wikipedia article.
P.P.S. Wikipedia? I really must be living under a rock.
